The Collector's Encyclopedia of Roseville Pottery, Volume 1, long considered the essential reference for collectors, contains sections on the history of Roseville pottery, development of the Rozane art pottery and other art lines, Roseville artists and their signatures as well as trademarks, line descriptions and dates of production.
Illustrating the book are nearly 150 color photographs, many full page, such as Plate 115 that depicts Water Lily vases, ewers, cornucopias and baskets among other shapes. The color images are complemented by more than 60 black-and-white advertisements and reprints of Roseville catalog pages from 1905 to the 1940s. In all, the book showcases over 800 pieces of Roseville pottery.
A glossary of related terms and an alphabetical index of Roseville patterns, from Apple Blossom to Zephyr Lily, round out the information that both novice and advanced collectors will appreciate.
This 2001 edition of Volume 1 has been gently used, occasionally displayed at shows but mostly stored for the past 3 or 4 years in a box with other books. The binding is tight, all pages are clean and the cover shows only faint scuffs common to its glossy surface even when new. My inventory number and name are on the image only, not on the actual cover.
Although a 2003 edition with updated values is still in print, a beginning collector easily can learn much about Roseville pottery and get a feel for comparative values by starting with this used, older edition at a bargain price.
